Changan Open New Test Centre and Unveil Blue Core 1.5T Engine


On the 12th November 2019, Changan held a ceremony to officially open their new state-of-the-art Powertrain Test Centre at their Parkside site, located on the Birmingham Business Park. The occasion also marked the unveiling of their brand-new Blue Core 1.5T high efficiency engine.

Changan UK R&D Centre is a World Class Automotive Powertrain Research and Development Centre. To equip the centre with World Class test capability, Changan has invested £16m to build this state-of-the-art powertrain Test Centre. The Test Centre can test a full range of powertrain systems for passenger vehicles, from conventional vehicles to hybrids or EVs. The Test Centre was partly funded by Greater Birmingham & Solihull LEP. Changan has plans to extend their testing capability to include fuel cell systems in the very near future.

Blue Core Powertrain is a vital part of Changan’s Mission Shangri-La, an initiative to significantly lift efficiency and green credential of Changan’s fleet. Blue Core is an uncompromising automotive powertrain solution that represents world class performance and fuel economy. The development of Blue Core powertrains was led by the team at Changan UK R&D Centre. The latest model in the line-up, the Bluecore 1.5T, upholds with Blue Core DNA and delivers maximum power 132KW, maximum torque 300Nm and meets the China 6b the hardest emission standard in the world right now.

The new Bluecore 1.5T engine is expected to be equipped in Changan’s best sellers including their most popular model CS75 Plus.

A plaque to commemorate the New Test Centre along with the New Bluecore 1.5T engine were both unveiled by Dr Xiaoyu Zhang , Director of the Changan Blue Core Platform, Dr. Tiegang Hu, General Manager of Changan UK R&D Centre together with the keynote speakers and senior members of Changan UK.

Changan UK R&D Centre was founded in 2010 by Changan Automobile Group. Changan UK has come a long way in a very short time and it is their vision to become a World Leading Powertrain R&D Centre and a promoter and practitioner of green powertrain technologies.

Changan UK currently hire 130 people in Birmingham and are working on Changan’s next generation powertrain systems including fuel cell and intelligent powertrains.

Keynote speakers included, Councillor Ian Courts (Leader of the Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council), Mr Tim Pile (Greater Birmingham & Solihull LEP), Professor Hongming Xu (University of Birmingham), Mr Ge Tan (Chinese Embassy) and Councillor Jayne Francis, (Birmingham City Council), who made speeches at the ceremony.

Councillor Ian Courts, Leader of Solihull Council, said: “I was very impressed with the centre and proud that Solihull has been chosen for the test centre, after a great deal of research and investigation. A great deal of thought has clearly been put into the test facility; not only do we see cutting edge technology, but environment and sustainability are integrated like a golden thread and the team are clearly enthusiastic about everything they do.”

Chair of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP), Tim Pile, said: “Welcoming a world-leading business such as Changan to the West Midlands, a region synonymous with the automotive industry,  is fantastic and the new facility and technologies which are being implemented at its base at Birmingham Business Park are extremely impressive.

 “It is extremely encouraging that the West Midlands will be at the heart of automotive innovation as Changan continues to move into a future where vehicles are greener, more efficient and increasingly environmentally friendly.

 “Changan’s presence will be of great benefit to the people of Greater Birmingham and Solihull, both in terms of creating direct jobs, teaching new skills and supporting hundreds of jobs in the regional and national supply chain.”

Councillor Jayne Francis, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills & Culture, said “I was delighted to be invited to represent the Leader of the Council at the UK Test Centre opening and the unveiling of the new engine at Changan’s UK R&D Centre. I was incredibly impressed by the facilities and the commitment Changan has shown to the creation of quality jobs and to the development of talent. Dr Tiegang Hu, the General Manager of CAUK, summarized after the event that “The debut of the Bluecore 1.5T high-efficiency engine and the unveiling of the CAUK state of the art test facility, symbolise that CAUK has reached a new level of technology and R&D capabilities development. CAUK is one step closer to its goal of 'building a world-leading powertrain R&D centre'”.
